2nd Annual Portlock Lecture: ‘Gold in the Irish Archipelago – The Clues to the Treasure’
Speaker: Prof Garth Earls EurGeol,  Adjunct Professor at University College Cork and former Director of GSNI.

Synopsis. Gold has been synonymous with Irish history for centuries. Most of the records concern Irish gold artifacts, however occasional clues to gold in stream gravels from parts of the country have been chronicled over time. In the 1970s one geologist said ‘the biggest anomaly in these islands is the absence of a gold deposit’.
The presentation will trace historical reports of gold in Ireland, through how gold in bedrock was discovered in many locations in the British Isles to the genesis of the gold depositsand the potential for future discoveries.

Wine reception 6.30-7.00 pm.     Lecture and discussion 7.00-8.30 pm
Geography Department, QUB, Elmwood Avenue, Belfast.
