SUMMARY:Belfast Geologist’s Society Talk: “Finding unmarked graves of all ages across the world”
DESCRIPTION:Joint event with Belfast Naturalists Field Club \nOnline only via Zoom on 14th January 2025 at 7pm\, \n“Finding unmarked graves of all ages across the world” by Benjamin Rocke (QUB) and Dr Alastair Ruffell (QUB and Geological Society NI Regional Group). \nGeology\, soils\, topography and vegetation can all be used with other information to locate unmarked graves: how? \nOne approach would be to have separate specialists conduct ground surveys and combine their results. We have developed another way\, using software modelled drone-derived imagery\, verified on the ground by visual means\, geophysics and in some cases assessment by scent dogs and ultimately\, excavation by qualified archaeologists. The model was developed successfully in Ireland for locating homicide and Irish Famine graves\, then extended to the Americas (Philadelphia\, Colombia) and thence to Kenya and Arctic Sweden. Other workers have used the method in the Middle East.
