SUMMARY:IAEG 2025 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Association for Economic Geology (IAEG) are pleased to announce that Filipa Luz\, Exploration Geologist and Greenfield Project Manager at Almina – Minas do Alentejo S.A.\, will be presenting as part of their 2025 Lecture Series. \nFilipa Luz will be speaking on the topic of “The Sherlock lens: Looking for base metals in the Iberian Pyrite Belt”. \nJoin online at 7 pm on Wednesday the 27th of August. Register via the website: https://lnkd.in/eG7a8FWR. \nMineral exploration geologists can be commonly perceived as Sherlock’s. Recent revitalization of exploration surveys in the Iberian Pyrite Belt has renewed the interest in developing a new and systematic study workflow based on a multi-approach methods. Back to mapping and gather it with new technologies\, use the sensitivity of geochemistry and geophysics and focus on a geology drive model for exploration success. The refinement of metallogenic models will be a useful tool for future mineral exploration surveys in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. This presentation will focus on a success case\, where I assume Sherlock’s role looking for base metals in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. \nRegistration is open via the IAEG website. Please register in plenty of time to ensure you receive an invite in time. Please note that the Lecture is an IAEG members only event. \nFor further information contact secretary@iaeg.ie \nFor membership queries contact treasurer@iaeg.ie.

SUMMARY:IGA Day Excursion to Killiney
DESCRIPTION:This excursion\, named “The Hot and Cold of Killiney Geology” will take place on Saturday 30th August. \nIt will be led by Prof. John Walsh and Dr Sam Kelley. \nMeet at Killiney DART Station at 09:30 with the excursion expected to take between 3 and 4 hours. \nThe plan is to walk along the beach looking at hard rocks and glacial sediments. This will be followed by a walk from the beach to the top of Killiney Hill (150m). The latter is along a good path\, but in places it can become a stiff walk up steps. \nThe hard rock side of things will involve looking at the contact of the Leinster Granite\, including a variety of granites together with associated contact and regional metamorphic rocks. We’ll examine evidence for the nature and timing of granite intrusion (ca 405My old) relative to the Caledonian Orogeny. The glacial geology of the Killiney area is complex\, and as we’ll see\, the glacial sediments backing Killiney Beach have been modified by glacio-tectonic processes\, resulting in features commonly seen within faulted or tectonised rocks\, such as faults and folds. \nPlease register for this excursion by clicking on this Google Form HERE
