DESCRIPTION:The Royal Irish Academy is pleased to be partnering with the Geographical Society of Ireland to host an evening panel event exploring geography and geosciences in the school curriculum. \nTaking place during Geography Awareness Week 2025\, on Wednesday\, 19 November 2025 at 6.00 p.m (Followed by reception at 7.30 p.m.) at the Royal Irish Academy\, 19 Dawson Street\, Dublin 2\, and online.  \nThe panel discussion aims to draw attention to the importance of geography and geosciences in evolving school curricula\, across primary\, post-primary and higher education\, and to highlight how these disciplines can support and enhance the renewed focus on education around climate action and sustainable development. \nThe event will be structured as a keynote delivered by Professor David Kaplan\, Kent State University\, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr Karen Keaveney\, President of the Geographical Society of Ireland. DESCRIPTION:Royal Irish Academy / 2026 Geological Survey Ireland Geoscience lecture on Thursday 29 January 2026 at 6.00pm at the Royal Irish Academy\, 19 Dawson Street\, Dublin 2\, D02 HH58. \nThe talk\, entitled ‘Why does net zero need geoscience?’ will be given by Karen Hanghøj\, Director of the British Geological Survey. \nBook your ticket here. \nRenewable energy and mobility technologies create a strong demand for certain raw materials. Potential scarcity and criticality of these materials might negatively impact the energy transition\, and the downstream supply chain significantly. The sustainable use of natural resources is essential for the energy transition and for reaching Net Zero. \nThis presentation will focus on the importance of knowledge about minerals and metals in this context. The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Ireland-based geologists to bring an Irish perspective to the topic. \nKaren Hanghøj is the Director of the British Geological Survey. She is a geologist with extensive experience in research and innovation management and the minerals and metals industry. Karen is passionate about understanding the complexity of resource management\, about environmental and social sustainability\, and about the role of geoscience in finding solutions to societal challenges. Karen holds a PhD in Geology from University of Copenhagen and has worked with research on geological processes in the lower crust and mantle and their associated mineral deposits\, before taking senior leadership roles in research and innovation organisations. She is a member of a range of international committees and working groups.

DESCRIPTION:A one-day workshop\, entitled “Our Aquatic Environment: Conservation and Restoration” co-organised by Ulster University\, Northern Ireland Science Festival\, and the Royal Irish Academy’s Climate Change and Environmental Sciences Committee will be held on Thursday 12th February 2026 from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Ulster University Belfast Campus\, York Street\, Belfast\, BT15 1ED.  \nBook your ticket here. \nThis event aims to bring together diverse expertise from across the island of Ireland to critically examine ‘our aquatic environment’ and the measures being taken to protect and restore it. The theme will be explored through a variety of lenses\, including policy and governance\, scientific diagnosis\, social awareness\, interdisciplinary approaches\, and climate science. The event will be geared towards water scientists\, researchers\, policy makers\, and environmental stakeholders. \nThe workshop will be structured around a keynote talk and two panel sessions\, the first looking at threats to the aquatic environment and the second exploring policy and action to mitigate these threats.\nThe workshop will be followed by a public lecture delivered by science journalist\, Olive Heffernan. \nTickets for the public lecture can be booked directly on the Northern Ireland Science Festival website.
