SUMMARY:IAEG 2025 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Association for Economic Geology (IAEG) are pleased to announce that Filipa Luz\, Exploration Geologist and Greenfield Project Manager at Almina – Minas do Alentejo S.A.\, will be presenting as part of their 2025 Lecture Series. \nFilipa Luz will be speaking on the topic of “The Sherlock lens: Looking for base metals in the Iberian Pyrite Belt”. \nJoin online at 7 pm on Wednesday the 27th of August. Register via the website: https://lnkd.in/eG7a8FWR. \nMineral exploration geologists can be commonly perceived as Sherlock’s. Recent revitalization of exploration surveys in the Iberian Pyrite Belt has renewed the interest in developing a new and systematic study workflow based on a multi-approach methods. Back to mapping and gather it with new technologies\, use the sensitivity of geochemistry and geophysics and focus on a geology drive model for exploration success. The refinement of metallogenic models will be a useful tool for future mineral exploration surveys in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. This presentation will focus on a success case\, where I assume Sherlock’s role looking for base metals in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. \nRegistration is open via the IAEG website. Please register in plenty of time to ensure you receive an invite in time. Please note that the Lecture is an IAEG members only event. \nFor further information contact secretary@iaeg.ie \nFor membership queries contact treasurer@iaeg.ie.

SUMMARY:RIA / GSI Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Royal Irish Academy / 2026 Geological Survey Ireland Geoscience lecture on Thursday 29 January 2026 at 6.00pm at the Royal Irish Academy\, 19 Dawson Street\, Dublin 2\, D02 HH58. \nThe talk\, entitled ‘Why does net zero need geoscience?’ will be given by Karen Hanghøj\, Director of the British Geological Survey. \nBook your ticket here. \nRenewable energy and mobility technologies create a strong demand for certain raw materials. Potential scarcity and criticality of these materials might negatively impact the energy transition\, and the downstream supply chain significantly. The sustainable use of natural resources is essential for the energy transition and for reaching Net Zero. \nThis presentation will focus on the importance of knowledge about minerals and metals in this context. The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Ireland-based geologists to bring an Irish perspective to the topic. \nKaren Hanghøj is the Director of the British Geological Survey. She is a geologist with extensive experience in research and innovation management and the minerals and metals industry. Karen is passionate about understanding the complexity of resource management\, about environmental and social sustainability\, and about the role of geoscience in finding solutions to societal challenges. Karen holds a PhD in Geology from University of Copenhagen and has worked with research on geological processes in the lower crust and mantle and their associated mineral deposits\, before taking senior leadership roles in research and innovation organisations. She is a member of a range of international committees and working groups.

SUMMARY:IAEG Online Lecture Series 2026
DESCRIPTION:The David Hall Exploration Fund Student Mapping Project Presentations will take place on Monday 2nd March at 7pm. \nTheertha Rajesh and Natalie Cole\, both final year Geology students in UCD\, will present their mapping projects. \nTheertha’s final year mapping project will focus on the Villamanin region in north western Spain\, an area within the Variscan fold and thrust belt associated with the Pyrenean-Cantabrian mountains. The primary aim is to understand the timing and nature of lithological deposition\, particularly in the context of facies successions that reflect environmental and depositional changes through time. \nThe second major focus is on structural geology. Natalie’s mapping project will also focus on the Villaminin region in north western Spain. The primary goal is to understand the geological and tectonic development of the area including changes in depositional setting and any mineralisation that may have occurred. \nThe study will also investigate how these rocks have been influenced by the deformation associated with tectonic events\, such as folding\, faulting and volcanism. This lecture is open to all. Registration is open via the IAEG website IAEG – IAEG 2026 Lecture Series – David Hall Fund Students Mapping Project Presentations. Please register in plenty of time to ensure you receive an invite.
