On 11th October in the Sheraton Hotel Athlone, the Board of the IGI were delighted to be joined by over 100 delegates and 14 sponsors over the course of a day where we celebrated the founding and the last 20 years of the IGI, looked into the future with the launch of the new strategy and heard from a range of speakers on the topics of the climate emergency and community engagement. We had around 50 people take part in ‘speed networking’ which saw delegates from all career stagesand disciplines get to know one another in an out-of-the-ordinary networking event. The day was finished off by the celebration Gala dinner and music from ‘Boxty’.

The IGI would like to thank members, stakeholders and sponsors who attended the 20th anniversary conference. The generosity and support of our many sponsors made the day possible.

The presentations from the conference are available to view here

Those who attended will attest to how challenging some of these issues are to address. We heard from climate and community activists who expressed strong opinions about the role of geologists – opinions that weren’t easy for us to hear at times. The opinions prompted a number of talking points both at the conference and afterwards. We thank delegates for their feedback on the event and we are now looking forward to developing a number of initiatives which will actively support geologists on challenging issues and address misinformation about our members’ activities in Ireland. These will be announced in due course and we invite members to get involved with the IGI if they feel they would like to contribute to initiatives on these matters.
